Seurasin keväällä 2024 Madridissa kaduilla eläviä kyyhkyjä. Heidän ilahduttavan runsaissa sulkapeitteissään välkkyi valkoisen, violetin, vihreän, mustan ja ruskean sävyjä. Kyyhkyjen silmissä ja jaloissa oli kaunista keltaista ja korallinpunaista. Isoissa ja vanhoissa kaupungeissa sukupolvesta toiseen elämäänsä järjestäessään, kyyhkyjen sulkapeite on kehittynyt mielikuvituksellisesti. Luonnollisten petojen puuttuessa alkuperäinen maastoväritys ei ole ollut kaupungissa välttämätön ja he ovat lisääntyneet karanneiden kirjekyyhkyjen kanssa. 

Kaupungeissa elävät eläimet nähdään usein ongelmana, joka pitää ratkaista. Niihin liittyy pelkoja ja negatiivisia assosiaatioita, kuten likaisuus ja tautien leviäminen. Katsoessani kyyhkyjä aloin pian nähdä niissä toisenlaisia piirteitä. Kyyhkyt ovat yksilöitä kuten ihmiset. Ne tarkkailevat, harkitsevat ja ahnehtivat. Ne ovat selviytyjiä. Näin kyyhkyjä joilta puuttui varpaita tai kokonainen jalka. Piirtäessäni opin, että ne antavat toisilleen hoivaa nyppimällä kirput pois toistensa kasvoilta ja huolehtivat puhtaudestaan sukien koko sulkapukunsa läpi. 

Tarkastelin madridilaisia kyyhkyjä valokuvaten ja piirtäen ja dokumentoin sulkapeitteiden sävyjä. Piirroksissa on käytetty akvarellia ja mustetta. Projektia tuki Alfred Kordelinin säätiö.

In the spring of 2024, I was in Madrid watching pigeons living on the streets. Their delightfully rich plumage flickered in shades of white, purple, green, black and brown. Their eyes and feet were a beautiful yellow and coral red. In big and old cities, as they organise their lives from generation to generation, their plumage has evolved to become fanciful. In the absence of natural predators, the original rock dove's camouflage has not been necessary in the city and they have bred with the escaped carrier pigeons.

Urban animal populations are often seen as a problem to be solved. They are feared and associated with negative things like filthiness and spread of disease. As I observed the pigeons I soon started seeing other kinds of features in them. Pigeons are individuals, just like humans. They watch, they consider and hoard greedily. They are clean and tired survivors. I drew a sick bird I met in front of a grocery store, to whom I crushed some nuts as a spark of hope. I saw doves who were missing toes or a whole foot. As I drew, I learned that they take care of each other by picking fleas off each other's faces and take care of their hygiene by grooming their body using their beak. 

Pigeon Sketches opens a process in which I studied pigeons in Madrid by drawing and photographing. Drawings are combinations of watercolour and ink. The project was supported by the Alfred Kordelin Foundation.
